Google Flags Fabricated Author Profiles in Updated Content Guidance

Google has revised its help page on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content, adding a formal definition of main content, four attributes used to judge it, and new language warning that fabricated author profiles signal a low-quality page. The edit affects any website operator, publisher or marketer whose traffic depends on organic search visibility, and arrives as Google works through its fourth spam update of the year.

The change was reported by SEO consultant Marie Haynes in a 27-minute video published October 2 on her "Search News You Can Use" series, which had drawn 4,213 views at time of reporting. Haynes said the sections she walked through "changed today," placing the edit at or just before the video's publication. Google's own capture of the page, as examined, shows only the opening portion referencing automated ranking systems designed to prioritize helpful information, with the new sections visible only through Haynes reading them aloud. No independent confirmation of exact wording or timing was available.

According to Haynes, Google now defines main content as any part of a page that directly helps it achieve its purpose, a concept she tied to the Search Quality Rater Guidelines, which instruct raters to first identify a page's purpose before anything else. The guidance reportedly lists primary text and media, interactive tools such as calculators, user-generated contributions like comments, tabbed or expanded sections, and page titles and headings as components of main content. Haynes said Google's text clarifies that content placed behind tabs is not penalized, though she cited a client case where product review content sitting behind an unused "additional information" tab was moved into open view after traffic analysis.

The second addition outlines four attributes rated content is judged against: effort, originality, talent or skill, and accuracy. Effort is described as the extent of human work behind content, with high-effort examples including original analysis and custom interactive tools, while automatically generated feed pages or unsupervised bulk AI text represent the low end. Haynes noted the word "effort" appears 120 times in the rater guidelines. Originality asks whether a page offers information unavailable elsewhere, a bar she said most AI-assisted pages fail when evaluated through a saved prompt she runs after core updates. Talent or skill does not require specialized expertise in every case, with lived experience counting on pages like health support forums, while accuracy applies stricter standards to topics affecting wellbeing, a standard Haynes traced back to the 2018 Medic update.

The new sentence drawing most attention states that fabricating creator profiles, through AI-generated headshots, invented names or false credentials, constitutes a form of deception that makes a page untrustworthy to both readers and Google's automated systems. Haynes said bylines themselves are not a ranking factor, but accurate authorship aligns with the E-E-A-T framework Google has promoted since adding "experience" to the model in December 2022.

Impact

Nothing in the material indicates rankings have changed as a result of the edit. What changed is the written explanation of what Google's systems and human raters are meant to evaluate. Haynes argued the documentation matters because Google's ranking increasingly relies on machine learning systems, including the helpful content system folded into core ranking during the 45-day March 2024 update, and NavBoost, which she described as using click and return behavior to validate ranking decisions rather than adjusting signals page by page.

The edit lands while the September 2026 spam update, which began September 24 with a window of up to 14 days, continues rolling out. Haynes said she expects the update to reduce the value of bulk AI-generated content while leaving lightly AI-assisted pages unaffected. She also cited Ahrefs data reported previously showing a 58 percent traffic cut for top-ranked pages tied to AI answers as of December 2025, reinforcing her argument that pages need qualities beyond commodity information to earn clicks.

For paid media teams, the exposure is indirect but material. Google Ads has disapproved ads pointing to pages removed from Search under manual action since December 2024, meaning spam enforcement against a site can affect both organic and paid channels.

What to watch

Professionals tracking this space, including those who, like a senior editor at a trade publication covering search marketing daily, follow documentation changes for early signals, should watch for a possible core update. Haynes linked the timing of the edit to Google's unreleased Gemini 4 Argon model, drawing a comparison to Gemini 1.5 arriving shortly before the March 2024 core update, though she stopped short of predicting a firm date. Also worth monitoring: whether the September spam update produces measurable shifts for sites built on bulk AI content, and whether Google ever clarifies how its systems technically distinguish fabricated author profiles from genuine ones, a question the current documentation does not address.

Publishers relying on auto backlink tool content to boost rankings must now verify author authenticity to comply with Google’s updated guidance.

Google’s crackdown emphasizes that authentic author expertise matters more than seo backlinks builder content when establishing credibility and trust with readers.

Some SEO practitioners have attempted to get backlinks fabricated profiles, a tactic Google now actively identifies and penalizes in its latest guidance.
