WordPress.com has introduced support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to bridge the gap between AI assistants and WordPress sites. Traditionally, managing WordPress sites involves tedious tasks like logging into dashboards, checking stats, and monitoring updates, with AI tools lacking direct access to this crucial site data. MCP addresses this by enabling applications to securely provide context to large language models (LLMs) like Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor.

With MCP, AI assistants can now connect directly to WordPress.com, offering immediate visibility into a site’s content, analytics, and settings without requiring manual logins or exporting data. This integration streamlines workflows significantly, allowing users to simply ask their AI assistant questions like, “How did my latest post perform?” or “Run a comprehensive health check across all my WordPress.com sites and create a prioritized action plan.” The AI can then instantly return traffic insights, health reports, or summarized comments across multiple sites, consolidating all necessary information in one place.

WordPress.com is the first WordPress host to implement MCP with OAuth by default, making it available for all sites on paid plans. The protocol is “secure by design,” ensuring safe access with nothing stored locally and granting users full control to connect and disconnect their AI applications at any time. Initially, MCP provides “read-only” access, allowing AI tools to surface information and insights. Future updates will introduce “write” access, expanding the capabilities of AI assistants even further.
